ICALT´04 - Kids’ Club


ICALT 2004 conference invites children of age 6-16 to Kids' Club event held during the conference. Kids' Club event activities are based on Kids' Club technology club that has been at the Department of Computer Science in the University of Joensuu since fall 2001.

In Kids' Club participants work with open-ended problems using concretizing tools and programming for solving the problem. Working happens with pair or small group accordingly individual interests and skills. Tutors guide working process and help in problem situations.In addition to usage of programming and concretizing tools also other educational technology tools are applied in club, for exapmle concept mapping and self-reflection tools.

Call for participation

Schedule : Kids' Club event is held during ICALT 2004 conference from August 30th to September 1st. Activities take place at the Scince Park of Joensuu from morning to afternoon.

Fees : There is not a participation fee for children. Meals during the day each participant covers by themselves.

Age : For children and youth aged 6 to 16.(born in 1988-1998)

Activities : Kids' Club activities include building and programming, also other activities are planned (check call for staff). Activities are divided to tracks according to contents, age and previous experiences.Tracks can be like the following:

  • Robotics: Robotics is for all-aged children and young who want to build robots or devices using legos. Control is done manually and programming is not used.
  • Robotics and Programming: Robotics and programming is for all-aged children and young who want to build robots or devices using legos. Functions are realized using programming.
  • Programming: For elder participants who already have previous experience about programming and want to create a small application, for example an animation or a game.

Participants present their work for example in a form of a poster or digital presentation, that is procuded during Kids' Club, after the event.


Registration : Participants are registered by their parents registration form. Registration is open until the end of conference registeration.

 

Call for Staff in Kids’ Club event

Kids' Club is looking for University students and researcers for staff members to the Kids Channel event. Main task for staff members, called tutors, is together to create an inspiring atmosphere to act and guide children in their work. Conference organizers are also willing to hear interesting proposals for additional tracks in Kids Channel event. Please contact to Ms. Virnes and tell more about your idea for additional track.

Conference organizers will pay the conference fee for staff members. Traveling, accommodation and other costs staff members cover by themselves.
